About

About

DataAnalytics: Ecology Matters provides Consultancy, Books & Training Services in data analytics for ecology, conservation & environmental science. We run training courses in statistics, data science, data analysis, Microsoft Excel™, and R: the statistical programming language.

DataAnalytics: Ecology Matters was founded by Dr Mark Gardener. Mark is a scientist, lecturer and author.

Originally trained in optics, Mark turned to ecology and eventually gained a PhD researching amino acids in floral nectar. Mark has conducted ecological research in the UK and around the world. Mark has taught courses for various universities and organisations, on topics such as: biological recording, environmental science, ecology, and conservation biology. Data analytics featured in many of the courses and more recently Mark has focussed on this aspect of science.

Mark lives in South London with his wife, Christine, a biochemist.

Research

Dr Mark Gardener, founder of DataAnalytics: Ecology Matters, has carried out a variety of research. Research topics for doctoral and postdoctoral studies have included:

  • Plant-animal interactions.
  • Defence mutualism.
  • Analytical chemistry.
  • Behavioural ecology.
  • Invasive species.
  • Conservation biology.

Research work was carried out throughout the UK as well as in the USA (Georgia, Colorado, Arizona, Hawai’i) and Australia (Queensland).

More recent research work has involved assisting students and other researchers in a range of disciplines. The early research was primarily connected with plant-animal interactions (e.g. pollination). More recent research has involved a wide range of taxa and topics.

Teaching

Dr Mark Gardener, founder of DataAnalytics: Ecology Matters, has a wide variety of teaching experience at different levels including: A-level, undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral.

Mark has experience of teaching in the field, in a classroom setting, and online.

  • In the field: teaching practical skills.
    • Ecology: including NVC, plant ID, conservation biology, and sampling methods.
    • Environmental Science: including hydrology, and soil science.
    • Pollination biology.
  • In the classroom:
    • Ecology
    • Environmental Science.
    • Statistics and Data Analytics: including Excel and R: the statistical programming language.
  • Online:
    • Ecology
    • Environmental Science.
    • Statistics and Data Analytics.

Mark is also the author of several textbooks on ecology, statistics and data analytics.

Scientific Papers

Dr Mark Gardener, founder of DataAnalytics: Ecology Matters, has written a number of scientific papers. These scientific papers have been authored by Mark, sometimes in collaboration with other researchers.

The scientific papers have been published in a variety of peer-reviewed scientific journals. Most of the papers are available to download, see the list here: https://www.dataanalytics.org.uk/about/scientific-papers/.

The scientific papers cover a range of topics, including Mark’s PhD research on amino acids in floral nectar, and collaborations with researchers around the world on subjects ranging from defence mutualisms to microbiota in dairy cows.
